Enterprise WordPress Security Framework
A lightweight WordPress security plugin I built in 2023 for a science publishing and research-communication organization running about 5 sites. It replaced a heavy security suite and stopped brute-force logins at the door, and there have been no compromises since.
At a glance
- Client: Science publishing and research-communication organization (kept anonymous)
- Scope: About 5 WordPress sites
- Built: 2023, solo, for the client
- Status: In use on the client’s sites
The problem
Their logins faced repeated brute-force and credential-stuffing attempts. They already ran a large security suite, but it slowed the sites down and its dashboard was hard for their staff to understand.
Why custom instead of Wordfence or similar
They needed a few protections done well, with a dashboard their staff could read at a glance. A general-purpose suite added features, scanning load and upsells they didn’t need.
What I built
- Hardened authentication and brute-force protection at the login.
- File integrity monitoring that flags changed core, plugin and theme files.
- Security event logging for logins, changes and blocked requests.
- Security headers set consistently on every site.
- A simple admin dashboard written for non-technical staff.
How it works
Each protection is an independent module that can be switched on or off per site. That avoids the main problem with all-in-one suites: features a site doesn’t need still cost performance and cause plugin conflicts.
The authentication module hooks into WordPress’s own login flow instead of replacing it, so it stays compatible with other plugins and themes. A lightweight event pipeline collects security events, filters out noise, and makes the rest searchable from the dashboard and through a REST API for outside security tools.
Results
- Brute-force attempts are blocked at the login.
- No compromises since it was installed.
- Admin pages load faster than they did with the old suite.
