Wine Pairing Menu Guide

(Proprietary software)

Interactive Menu & Wine Training System

Overview

Wine Pairing Menu Guide is a progressive web application built to help restaurant staff master menu knowledge. From ingredient details and preparation methods to wine pairings and allergen information, the platform transforms the often-overwhelming process of learning a restaurant’s offerings into an interactive, structured study experience.

New hires at upscale restaurants are expected to have comprehensive knowledge of every dish, every wine, and every ingredient — often within their first few weeks. Via Menu Guide was created to make this process faster, more engaging, and more effective than traditional paper study guides.

Key Features

  • Interactive Study Tools — Flashcard-style review, categorized browsing, and searchable menu databases
  • Quiz System — Self-assessment quizzes that test knowledge of ingredients, preparations, pairings, and allergens
  • Wine Pairing Guide — Detailed wine profiles with recommended food pairings, tasting notes, and region information
  • Allergen Tracking — Quick-reference allergen information for every menu item, critical for guest safety
  • Offline Access — PWA architecture allows staff to study even without an internet connection
  • Menu Versioning — Support for seasonal menu changes with version history to track what’s current

Technical Implementation

Wine Pairing Menu Guide is built as a Progressive Web App using JavaScript, designed to be installable on mobile devices and function offline through service worker caching. The UI prioritizes speed and simplicity — staff should be able to look up any menu item in seconds, even during a busy service.

Menu data is structured in a normalized format that separates dishes, ingredients, preparation notes, allergens, and pairings into related but independent datasets. This allows the quiz engine to generate dynamic questions that test different aspects of menu knowledge based on the staff member’s progress and weak areas.

The application supports content management by restaurant managers, who can update menu items, add seasonal specials, and adjust quiz content without any technical knowledge. Changes propagate to all staff devices automatically when they next connect.

Design Philosophy

The design philosophy centers on reducing friction. In a restaurant environment, staff need answers immediately — whether it’s confirming an allergen for a guest at the table or reviewing a wine pairing before making a recommendation. Every interaction in Via Menu Guide is optimized for speed, with search-first navigation and minimal tap targets to reach any piece of information.
